Expired Domain: Why the Site Vanished Completely

$ whois example.com Domain Status: expired

Of all the reasons a site goes down, an expired domain is the most total: it doesn't degrade or slow down, it simply stops existing on the internet until it's renewed.

How domain expiry works

Every domain is registered for a fixed term (commonly one year) through a registrar. If it isn't renewed before that term ends, most registries move it through a short grace period, then a redemption period where it can still be recovered (often at a steep fee), and finally release it back for anyone to register. Once DNS resolution stops, every service tied to that domain — website, email, subdomains — stops working at the same time.

How to check if this is what happened

How to fix it

If you still have registrar access

Renew immediately. If it's within the grace period, this is usually instant and inexpensive. If it's moved into redemption, expect a higher fee and a longer wait for DNS to come back.

If you lost access to the registrar account

Use the registrar's account recovery process. Have any old invoices, payment records, or the original registration email ready to prove ownership.

To avoid this happening again

Quick checklist
  • Run a WHOIS lookup and check the expiry date and status field
  • Log in to the registrar directly to confirm and renew
  • Turn on auto-renewal once it's back to prevent a repeat
